5 Hacks That Will Make Your Heels More Comfortable

Posted on

It’s Monday. And for many of us that means exchanging the weekend’s comfy sneakers and broken-in boots and slipping on something a little more vertiginous. Heels, high heels.

Like that extra cup of coffee that most of us need to kick off the week, here are five editor-approved shoe hacks that will stealthily make your heels more bearable. How’s that for putting a pep in your step?

1) Sneaky socks

A sharp pointed pump feels a whole lot more like a soft slipper than a foot-binder when worn with thin nylon or silk socks. Less friction against the foot means no blisters nor the incessant desire to kick your heels off under your desk. Bonus: novelty socks are cool right now and give the look of an ad-hoc bootie.

Keep a stash in your office drawers for when shoes start to rub you the wrong way.

2) Size up and slip in an in-sole

Especially since most people have a size discrepancy between feet, going up a full or half size will add space for inserts. While there are many great insoleson the market, an easy hack is to swipe them from a trusty pair of trainers. They’ll be extra supportive and comfortable. This is an especially handy trick for boots. For more open or slim styles, try just a gel pad at the ball of the foot.

3) Put your feet up

Elevating your feet (on a chair, stool or table) increases blood flow and is a helpful trick in a pinch. This is something that foot models always do on-set to soften veins and alleviate pain.

4) Befriend a cobbler

The simple addition of a rubber Topy sole for traction or having shoes machine-stretched can make them much easier to walk long distances in.

5) Step on it

Mule and babouche-style shoes are a big trend right now and you can get the same result by simply stepping on the backs of heels to collapse the leather. Call it the make-shift mule. In a bind, this will save you.
